Rapper and singer-songwriter Yung Gravy released his 7th studio album, Serving Country. The album consists of a 14-song tracklist which includes his single "Clementine."
Yung Gravy will be heading on his Grits and Gravy Tour starting September 1st in Iowa and ending November 29th in Minnesota.
You made a name for yourself as a hip-hop artist/ rapper. What inspired you to go country?
Yung Gravy: It was just fun. I was sick of doing the same stuff. I would do an album and try new things and get better every time. I was like I need to do something completely new. I met a lot of people in country and they were so cool and welcoming. I thought about doing an EP or song with them. Then Diamond Pistols and I got to working on it and we just loved it. It was such a blast that we made a whole album.
Do you have any tour essentials you'll be bringing with you on your upcoming tour?
Yung Gravy: I just adjusted my ride. I just got back from my Australian tour and I changed some things on my rider. In every city I go to I ask for two dozen roses, three boxes of fruit loops and a local jersey of whoever the runner's favourite on the team is. I have a bunch of jerseys that say Gravy on the back. Coconut water, Johnny Walker Black, ginger shots, bananas, and beef jerky.
What is your favorite song from this album?
Yung Gravy: "I Went To Jail In Georgia" because it’s a true story and I recreated it in the music video with the people I got arrested with 10 years ago. People kept asking why have you been to jail more than one time in Georgia, so I was like you know what, I’m gonna answer the question and I made a song about it. I basically produced that song, I can’t produce a song myself with my hands. But I was pointing and telling the producer how to do it. That beat was the closest I've been to producing a song.
If you could set fans up in the perfect environment to listen to your upcoming album, Serving Country, what would you imagine it being like?
Yung Gravy: In the south, there's green grass, cigarettes, beer, and just like some southern comfort. I’m imagining the "Electric Feel" music video but less cute and more ratchet. What message do you hope listeners take away from your music?
Yung Gravy: Happy, party, good vibes, and music to enjoy and feel good about.
What do you wish people were asking you about Serving Country? Is there something you wish people to notice or take away from this project?
Yung Gravy: I would prefer if the gatekeeper-type people went in with an open mind. This is not a country album, this is country gravy. "Clementine" is probably the best example of what the rest of the project sounds like. Bangers, country flavor down south. How does it feel touring with a seventh album under your belt?
Yung Gravy: Good, I'm pretty proud that I survived that long. Obviously, people want to hear a lot of my range. Every album has a couple of songs that people want to hear. I just play my whole catalogue every time. This tour I'm sectioning it out in a certain way. I don’t know the exact order but it’ll be like the SoundCloud era, country section, plus some covers. Then pimped out versions of my hits with extra instruments. Come to the show, it's going to be lit. If you could have a drink with any artist dead or alive who would it be and why?
Yung Gravy: Probably Frank Sinatra. I think the conversation would be really interesting. He's one of my favorite artists. I would love to go to him, instead of him coming here. If I could, maybe get away with the whole rat pack and have a couple drinks that would be my dream.
