The Plot In You - Vol. 3 EP

The artwork for the latest EP, Vol. 3, from The Plot In You.

Since their debut, The Plot In You has carved a unique place in heavy music, blending raw emotional expression with sonic power. With their latest EP, Vol. 3, which is set for release on November 8, 2024, via Fearless Records, they continue this journey with three meticulously crafted songs that examine the pains of personal relationships and the broader issues of our time. With this release, vocalist Landon Tewers and the band lean into new influences while staying true to their emotionally charged roots, resulting in a record that feels both introspective and aware of the world outside.

"Been Here Before" opens the EP with intensity, diving deep into the emotional turbulence that characterizes many of the band’s narratives. Here, Tewers captures the delicate push and pull of staying in a relationship despite the strain. There’s a raw honesty in the lyrics that’s intensified by the band’s atmospheric production and crashing instrumentals, making the track feel both deeply personal and universally relatable. Interestingly, Tewers draws some inspiration from pop-punk in the way he navigates relationship themes, adding a fresh layer to The Plot In You's sound. This influence doesn’t dampen their signature intensity; instead, it adds a sharper edge to the storytelling, making this one of their most accessible yet powerful songs.

Following this, "Pretend" shifts gears, focusing on broader social themes. Tewers confronts the isolating “bubbles” people live in, detached from the world’s harsh realities. It’s a heavy topic, yet the song avoids feeling overly preachy. Instead, The Plot In You strikes a balance, pulling the listener into an uncomfortable awareness of global tragedies without sacrificing the song’s musicality. The haunting undertones and layered instrumentation amplify the message, providing a dark and reflective backdrop that resonates long after the final note.

Closing out the EP is "Spare Me," which continues the group’s exploration of vulnerability, both personally and in a broader sense. The inclusion of "Spare Me," suggests a theme of boundaries and self-preservation amidst chaos. Listeners can expect the visceral vocals and sharp instrumentals that The Plot In You are known for, creating a cathartic conclusion to the band's latest EP.

Overall, Vol. 3 reaffirms The Plot In You’s position as a band unafraid to dive into uncomfortable themes, using a mixture of raw lyrics and genre-blending to keep listeners captivated. Tewers’ experimentation with pop-punk-inspired elements adds a new flavour, and it’s exciting to see the band adapt without compromising their core. Vol. 3 might only be three tracks, but each is packed with emotional depth and musical complexity, making it a must-listen for both long-time fans and new listeners alike.
