Los Angeles-based glam metal and hard rock quartet Steel Panther have made a name for themselves since they formed in 2000 as Metal Shop, with later name changes to Danger Kitty (2003) and Metal Skool (2003-2008). Nonetheless, the band changed their name to Steel Panther, and the sky was no longer the limit. The band's success has been on a steep incline since, and with the release of their debut album, Feel the Steel (2009), Steel Panther has reached the pinnacle of their success so far and has become a fully independent band. They've reached the point where they have entirely produced and will self-release their sixth studio album, On The Prowl, set for release later this week, on February 24, 2023.
The band consists of vocalist Michael Starr, guitarist Satchel, drummer Stix Zadinia, and the latest addition to Steel Panther, bassist Spyder - who joined Steel Panther as a full-time member last fall, just before the band embarked on their 2022 North American tour. On The Prowl is the band's first record without Lexxi Foxx and their first with Spyder.
On The Prowl is a distinguishing transformation for Steel Panther. The band has managed to create their most cohesive release to date. On The Prowl features thirteen brand-new tracks from the never-ending creative brains within the band. Opening with a thrilling synth intro on the album-opening "Never Too Late (To Get Some Pu**y Tonight)," the band paints the perfect picture of what music was like in the 1980s. The album is chock full of what makes Steel Panther who they are, in songs such as "Never Too Late (To Get Some Pu**y Tonight)," "Friends With Benefits," "On Your Instagram," "Is My D*ck Enough?," "Magical Vagina," "All That And More," and "One Pump Chump," to name a few. These songs are classic-style Steel Panther tracks, using comedic, vulgar, tongue-in-cheek lyrics juxtaposed with the glam metal structure that includes impressive guitar riffs and guitar licks, along with heart-pounding drums that the band has grown famous for. However, there's something dissimilar between these two tracks compared to the rest of the album. "1987" and "Ain't Dead Yet." These two tracks, in particular, showcases quite the maturity as songwriters and how they are capable of writing somewhat serious tracks behind the comedic ones. "1987" is an incredible nostalgic look back to the year the title alludes to, name-dropping all the greats of rock and heavy metal like Guns N' Roses, Poison, Whitesnake, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, and more. Then Steel Panther slows things down for the reflective and nevertheless witty acoustic ballad "Ain't Dead Yet." That details the band's intent to keep on going with their antics until they're dead. On The Prowl is available for pre-order on CD, cassette, and two different colour variant vinyl records here!
