Stand Atlantic's fourth studio album, WAS HERE, is a bold declaration that the band has no intention of slowing down, nor of adhering to anyone's expectations of what others think of them. Following the success of their Sidewinder EP (2017), Skinny Dipping (2018), Pink Elephant (2020) and F.E.A.R. (2022), the latter of which brought the Australian pop-punk band into the global spotlight, WAS HERE feels like both a continuation and a reinvention. It’s a record that refuses to be pinned down, blending the raw energy of their early work with a polished, more experimental sound.
Opening with the fiery "WAKE UP-SIT DOWN-SHUT UP," the album immediately sets the tone with a rebellious edge. It's a call to arms, a rallying cry for those who refuse to be silenced. This intensity carries into the following track, "FRENEMIES," a song that harkens back to Stand Atlantic's earlier sound while introducing a modern twist. The track’s exploration of tumultuous friendships is as relatable as it is cathartic, showcasing the band’s knack for turning personal strife into anthems. "GIRL$," featuring PVRIS and Bruses, is a standout, blending pop-punk with electronic elements in a way that feels fresh yet familiar. The collaboration adds layers of depth, with PVRIS’ Lynn Gunn and Bruses providing a dynamic contrast to Bonnie Fraser’s vocal delivery. The track is both an earworm and an empowerment anthem, with its infectious chorus and sharp lyricism.
"FREAKIN' OUT" captures the chaotic energy of anxiety, wrapped in a melody that even the lyrics say, it's a parasite, which makes it impossible to shake. Sueco’s feature on "NOSE BLEED" is another highlight of the album, bringing a hip-hop influence into the mix, making it one of the album’s most unique offerings. The juxtaposition of Bonnie’s sharp vocals with Sueco’s rhythmic verses makes for a track that’s both edgy and accessible.
"L0VE U ANYWAY" marks a departure for the band, presenting Bonnie’s first full-fledged love song. It’s a tender moment amidst the album's more aggressive tracks, providing a much-needed breather without sacrificing emotional impact. This song has the potential to become a universal anthem, resonating with anyone who’s ever loved fiercely, whether it's a partner, a friend, or family.
"CRIMINAL," featuring Australian metalcore band Polaris, is another heavy-hitter, delving into the darker side of the music industry. The track’s aggressive tone and biting lyrics offer a raw glimpse into the pressures of creating art while dealing with the exploitation that often comes with it. The Polaris collaboration brings a metalcore edge, adding a new layer of intensity to the entire album and Stand Atlantic's ever-evolving sound.
Tracks like "ROCKSTAR" and "SEX ON THE BEACH" bring back the fun, blending tongue-in-cheek lyrics with incredible infectious hooks. However, they never lose the edge that runs throughout WAS HERE. The closing track, "KILL[H]ER," is a fitting end, encapsulating the album's themes of rebellion, love, and the refusal to conform. It leaves the listener with a sense of both satisfaction and anticipation for whatever Stand Atlantic will do next.
WAS HERE is a testament to Stand Atlantic’s evolution as a band. It’s an album that refuses to be confined by genre or expectations, proving that they are here to stay, and they’ll do it on their own terms. With collaborations that push their sound in new directions and lyrics that cut to the core of its listener, Stand Atlantic has delivered a record that’s as raw as it is polished, as familiar as it is new. For fans old and new, WAS HERE is an album that demands to be heard.
