Songs For Sienna Tour: The Free Label and Jace Bodner Band - Winnipeg, MB

On an abnormally warm September evening, Blue Note Park was alive with energy as The Free Label brought their Songs For Sienna tour to Winnipeg on September 3, 2024. The park’s outdoor stage provided the perfect backdrop for a night that celebrated both the band’s rising trajectory and local talent.

Opening the show was Winnipeg's own Jace Bodner band, a group that set the tone with their soulful, blues-infused rock. Their performance was confident and heartfelt, capturing the crowd's attention right from the start. Infectious tunes like "Don't Ruin The Love" and "Maisie" showcased their tight musicianship, while Jace Bodner’s gravelly vocals gave the set a gritty, authentic edge. The local pride was palpable, with many in the crowd cheering on the hometown heroes as they warmed up the stage for the main event.

When The Free Label hit the stage, it was clear this was their night. The Toronto-based band, known for blending R&B, funk, and pop into an irresistible groove, had the crowd moving from the first note. The band's set was loaded with tunes spanning their career thus far. However, it was the songs they performed off their unreleased debut album Songs For Sienna -which is set for release on October 18, 2024- that immediately established their slick, upbeat vibe. The Free Label's new material feels like a natural evolution for the group, with polished production and lyrics that dig deeper into themes of love, desire, and self-discovery. “Blue Suede,” “Change Your Mind,” and “On The Floor (Let It Slide)” built up the band's momentum on stage, with their infectious choruses and danceable beats sending waves through the audience. The band performed these unreleased tracks with such confidence that it was clear they’ve been honing them for live shows. A standout moment came with “Crimes of Passion,” a song that slowed things down and showed off the band’s ability to create an intimate atmosphere amidst their more high-energy hits.

For longtime fans, The Free Label didn’t disappoint either. They peppered their set with fan favourites, including the undeniable hit “All Night” from their debut EP M.I.A., which drew one of the biggest responses of the night. The infectious chorus had the crowd singing along, solidifying the track as one of their most beloved singles.

Frontman Josh Daniel’s vocals were on point throughout the entire evening, seamlessly transitioning from smooth falsettos to powerful belts, while the rest of the band played with a tightness that comes from many years of performing together across the globe. Their charisma on stage was undeniable, and by the time they closed the night, it was clear that The Free Label’s forthcoming debut album is going to be something special.

Overall, The Free Label’s stop in Winnipeg was a masterclass in live performance. Balancing their new material with crowd-pleasing hits, they proved why they’re one of the most exciting up-and-coming bands in Canada right now. As the lights dimmed and the final notes faded, the anticipation for Songs For Sienna only grew stronger.
