The American singer-songwriter Hannah Collins, or now better known under the moniker RØSÉ, has released her debut single to the world with absolutely no help from a record label. Her first ever single under her new project is titled “Are You Tired?” and it debuted at number two on the iTunes rock charts. Additionally, the single also received immediate airplay on SiriusXM’s Octane. The production on “Are You Tired?” was handled by both Madatracker and Devin Bronson, who has previously worked with artists such as Sum 41, Avril Lavigne, and Demi Lovato.
Over the last few years, Hannah has been in living in Los Angeles writing and performing in various other projects that just haven’t garnered as much attention as “Are You Tired?” has. It took the COVID-19 lockdown, moving briefly back home to Ohio with her parents, and her love of the post-hardcore band Pierce the Veil for her to have the realization to take a swing at the genres that she has once and always loved. Hannah initially previewed the track on her TikTok, where she’s usually seen making funny, relatable videos touching on Warped Tour, her own music, and of course the “emo” music scene. Hannah actually released the track nearly a month earlier than originally intended all because of the raving feedback she was receiving from her one hundred thousand plus followers on TikTok.
“Are You Tired?” opens with a haunting piano part and the lyrics of the intro are a play on the traditional lullabies “Hush, Little Baby” and “Rock-a-bye Baby.” Both the lyrics and the haunting piano blended together to leave you with goosebumps running up your skin and a chill running down your spine. The single grows further and shows its true colours right away and RØSÉ’s influence of Pierce the Veil and other similar artists in that categorization of the music scene come right up to the forefront. The single features raw chugging guitars mixed with powerful bass lines and additionally blends the mix of clean vocals with some subtle, but clearly audible harsh screaming vocals featured in the song’s choruses.
Lyrically, “Are You Tired?” is about a fracture in a relationship leading to some frustration from one side. One person is loving, while the other is a liar, a snake, a cheat if you will. This person’s behaviour and actions have grown to the point where the other is beginning to become frustrated with all of it and begins to question their other half asking as the song’s title says, “Are you tired?”
RØSÉ’s debut single “Are You Tired?” is just the start of a very promising future for RØSÉ in music, and the scene. With the unexpected help of her TikTok following, she got a huge push to the top. She’s now urging for the music industry to change its stance about women in rock and heavier genres altogether as there isn’t very much charting or getting their shot in the industry.
