JayWood Shares Single "UNTITLED (Swirl)" Plus Its Music Video

Updated: 2 days ago

ANNOUNCES U.S. TOUR DATES SUPPORTING TUNE-YARDS

Abstract art with bold text "UNTITLED (SWIRL)" on orange background, featuring collage of ears, eyes, mouths, a phone, and geometric shapes.

Equally reminiscent of both the neo-soul eras of R&B luminaries D’Angelo and Maxwell, and the do-it-yourself indie ethos of his Captured Tracks labelmates Mac DeMarco and Homeshake, Montreal’s resident renaissance creative JayWood and his sonic explorations as of late – including the recent “BIG TINGS” feat. Tune-Yards – display an artistic evolution happening in real time, and in full swing. Don’t say you love me, under the sun…” he croons in the opening lines of his new song out today, “UNTITLED (Swirl).” A standalone single blending indie, soul, and R&B, the track moves with easygoing warmth before emerging into an uplifting chorus—pairing perfectly with spring.

Speaking on the new single, JayWood says, “It’s definitely a song about our relationship with phones and the false sense of connection it creates. I think throughout the song, I’m asking for genuine connection and reaching out to friends, trying to meet them where they’re at with energy and time. Don't say you love me under the sun / As if you ever make time for anyone. / You can't hide on the feed Which is kinda saying don't say we're close friends or homies if our only connection is sending reels to each other, vs: You don't have to be faithful / All I ask is checking in / Even if you're too worn down for quality time This is saying, we don't gotta do things all the time routinely but let's just show up with where we're at in life.

Co-director of the video with JayWood, Laura-Lynn Petrick, spoke about the process and collaboration, saying “‘UNTITLED (Swirl)’ is a daydream capturing JayWood's journey from a sort of winter hibernation-induced isolation (in Montreal) to reconnecting with those he loves. It’s about breaking free from the stillness of solitude and embracing the warmth of human connection - checking in."
