Interview With Josh Gilligan

You just released your new single "Anything," what can you tell us about the song? And the next single "500 Questions"?

Josh: “Anything” is musically one of the most straightforward songs on the record, but I think conceptually for me it resonates really deeply. I think it’s extremely hard to put yourself out there in the world today. I talk to people about this all the time, and so many people feel stuck and insecure right now. This song talks about that and I've had a lot of folks reach out about this one specifically saying they feel similarly. “500 Questions” kind of puts the magnifying glass on the same feeling. You’re stuck. Why? And what do you do next?

How do you feel knowing that your debut album is releasing soon?

Josh: I feel great. Debut is a big word for it but it’s probably correct… I’ve released a couple of projects through the years. One over 10 years ago and one shortly after that I took down. So yes, in a lot of ways, this does feel like a debut LP, or at least it’s the most unified I've ever felt with my own voice.

How did you come up with the title for the album?

Josh: It’s a record about being alone. That’s the simplest take on that. Funny enough the actual track is one of the songs I collaborated on. I wrote it with my friend Trent. That song in particular is about someone that ends up alone, reflecting back on the people that were there for them and that they could have been better to. I think it’s important to try those ideas/characters on and let them inform how we can live today.

What was the songwriting process like for 'Party Of One'? Were there any experiences or inspirations that helped you with the writing process?

Josh: It’s mainly autobiographical. I have spent so much time isolating the last few years. I have friends that love me, but I've found a lot of growth in solitude and I think it can be pretty fertile ground. There are highs and lows to it. Generally, this record covers that range of emotions and that’s what the songs are about. Most of the songs were written at home, as they decided to along.

If you could set fans up with the perfect environment to listen to 'Party Of One', what would it be?

Josh: Maybe the back house/studio that I live in. Where it was made!

What was the creative process like for creating artwork for the album and singles?

Josh: All of the artwork was shot by Emory Brown. She’s a really great visual artist and photographer here in Nashville. We went to the lake one morning and she shot all of the visuals in about an hour. We toyed around with doing a few other locations but it seemed like we had everything we needed from her first rolls of film.

Describe 'Party Of One' using three words?

Josh: Hopefully. Happily. Stuck.

What song are you most proud of on 'Party Of One'?

Josh: I love and like them all in different ways

You were recently on tour supporting Medium Build, what has that experience been like?

Josh: It was the highlight of my year. I love that crew like family, and I was so thankful for the opportunity to play with them and meet/play for the wonderful folks that love their music.

Are there any songs you enjoyed performing the most on tour?

Josh: “Anything” seemed to really connect with people most nights.
