Interview With Destiny Malibu

How would you describe your music to any person who may have never heard it? Destiny: I've been told that my music is a combination of Ellie Goulding, Iggy Azalea, and Ariana Grande. I do a lot of genre blending and combine sounds from soul, pop, EDM, rap, Latin, and more.

Is there any significance to your musical moniker? D: I go by Destiny Malibu. Destiny is my birth name, and Malibu is where I grew up. When I first launched my solo career, I went by Destiny, but I quickly learned it was difficult to brand myself since there was Destiny, the video game and endless amounts of search results for that one very popular word. I knew I needed to add a last name, and I wanted to pay tribute to my hometown since all my greatest childhood memories are there. One time I was at a party and made some new friends. As I was putting my number into their phone, they were from a different city, so I said to them, "Hey, I'm gonna put my name in here as Destiny Malibu, so you know who it is," and then like a light bulb I knew that was the moment I had officially found my artist name.

What are your musical inspirations? D: I listen to all types of music, but since I am in the pop world, I would say some of my biggest inspirations are Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Michael Jackson, Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, and Drake.

What is your new song, "Say My Name," about and what do you hope people take away from the song? D: My brand new upcoming single, "Say My Name," is a really special song to me, and I can't wait for everyone to hear it! It's the theme song of my podcast, The Destiny Malibu Podcast, and it's a mental health-focused song. I wrote it about the journey I've experienced with my mental health and how special it is to have someone who will be there for you through all the ups and downs.

Do you have any favourite songs to perform live? Could be your own music or even a cover. Any reason why? D: I have a lot of favourite songs to perform live. I love doing my originals, but there are a few covers I regularly perform that warm my heart every time because they are some of my favourites. "At Last" by Etta James and "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley are two of my favourites. I love the old-school pop sound, and anytime I get a chance to sing something soulful, I'm all in.

If you could perform a show this very second anywhere in the world, where would it be? D: There are so many venues I can't wait to perform at, and of course, some of the most iconic places I would love to have a concert at would be Madison Square Garden and the Staples Center -now called the Crypto Arena- as fun as big venues are though. I also absolutely adore smaller intimate venues where I can really connect with my fans. Some of my recent performances at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas "Shag Room" were absolutely a blast! What do you currently have planned for the remainder of the year? D: I am so excited to be on the cover of Deluxe Version Magazine - Lake Las Vegas this year. It will be my first magazine cover, and it is a huge honour! I am also working on some music for an upcoming animation. New music, new concert dates, and lots more to come! Thanks for the time today, Destiny! Is there anything else you may want to add before you go? D: Stay connected with me on socials!
