Interview With Nicollette Sullivan

How would you describe your music to any person who may have never heard it before? Nicollette: It's sultry, honest, and cinematic at times.

Press shot for jazz/neo-soul artist Nicollette Sullivan.

What are your musical influences? N: I’ve always gravitated to classic artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Sade and Christina Aguilera. More recently, I like Arianna Grande, H.E.R., and SZA. What are your musical inspirations? N: I’m inspired to write about what I have experienced, sometimes it’s like reading my journal. A lot of my lyrics have to do with personal relationships and experiences I have had. If given the chance, what musician(s) would you like to collaborate with? Rather this is to either write a song or be featured on a track. N: The Weeknd would be good. I think we'd blend well together vocally.

What’s your latest single, "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" about? N: My next single is "Love Don’t Live Here Anymore," it's about heartbreak and longing for someone you’re no longer with. What’s something you hope people take away from the new single? N: I hope they enjoy the performance of course, and I hope it helps them listen as much as it helped me making it. Which songs on the album were the most fun to write and which were the most challenging to write? N: The most fun tracks for me to write were "Tattered Wings" and "Last Dance". Those came easier to me than some of the others. The hardest for me to write was "Angel Eyes." I remember rewriting lyrics up until the day I was about to record outside while they were setting up.

Do you have any favourite songs off of the new album? N: I think "Love Don’t Live Here Anymore" is a beautiful song. What’s the new album about? N: It's about love, lust, and heartbreak. Do you have any favourite songs to perform live? It could be your own music or even a cover. Any reason why? N: I love to sing "Sweet Dreams," a cover I do of the Eurythmics. It's always a fun crowd-pleaser. If you could perform a show this very second anywhere in the world, where would it be? Is there any particular venue(s) or city/cities that comes to mind? N: Italy because I’d eat well before and after. What do you currently have planned for the remainder of the year? N: Releasing more music -hopefully a couple of EPs and a few videos- and playing live in the Los Angeles area and hoping to grow my fanbase with my new releases. Thanks for the time today, Nicollette. Is there anything else you may want to add before you go? N: Life is a journey, it's a day-by-day process, don’t get lost in the future. Just take care of today and tomorrow will take care of itself, enjoy the journey and be grateful.
