Down The Lees - Dirt EP

The artwork for the latest EP, Dirt, from the Canadian rock band Down The Lees.

Vancouver-based rock three-piece Down The Lees are back with their latest EP, Dirt, which was self-released on May 3, 2024. The new effort marks a significant evolution for the rock trio that is a surefire testament to their artistic growth and musical prowess. The band's latest seven-track EP was recorded and mixed by Jesse Gander at Raincity Recorders, with mastering provided by Blake Bickel at Dynamic Sound Service. Additionally, the EP features mesmerizing and striking cover artwork by Mirabelle Van de Put.

The EP opens with the title track, "Dirt," a powerful and emotive five-minute song that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Vocalist and guitarist Laura Lee Schultz's vocals soar over the driving instrumentation which blends noise rock and grunge elements seamlessly, delivering raw and introspective lyrics that explore themes of self-discovery and resilience. The EP continues on with its second track, "Douse," which maintains the intensity with its dynamic shifts, gripping melodies and haunting vocals. Whereas the EP's third track "Downplay" offers a much more stripped-down, introspective, and atmospheric sound, putting a massive spotlight on the band's versatility.

"Dissolve" blends both sides the band has showcased so far in the previous three tracks. It takes you on a journey with sentimental slower parts, then shifts back into the stoner-rock-drenched guitar riffs without any effort. The track "Dead and Over," takes a bit of a different turn from what the band has unleashed on the first five tracks, "Dead and Over" delivers a more rounded and melodic style to the EP, while being a haunting and evocative track that will leave a lasting impression with listeners. Songs such as "Deafening" and the EP's closing track, "Since La Vie En Rose" showcase Down The Lees' ability to craft immersive soundscapes, with layers of instrumentation that build to a cathartic climax.

Overall, Dirt is a remarkable EP that showcases Down The Lees' growth as musicians and songwriters. With its powerful vocals, intricate instrumentation, and thought-provoking lyrics, Dirt is a must-listen for fans of alternative and indie rock.
