The Exchange Event Centre in the heart of Winnipeg became a hub of soulful energy and heartfelt performances as the Dearly Loved Tour brought Toronto-based R&B artist RUSSELL! and Winnipeg’s own R&B/pop talent HAVS to town on November 20, 2024. For RUSSELL!, this marked his long-awaited return to the city after more than a decade, his last appearance being as an opener for Down With Webster and SonReal in early 2014. This homecoming was nothing short of electrifying, paired with HAVS’ equally stunning set as the opening act.

Kicking off the night, HAVS demonstrated why she’s become a rising star in Winnipeg’s music scene. Her setlist, a blend of smooth R&B and pop sensibilities, captivated the audience from the opening notes of “Stay.” Her sultry vocals on “u” and the empowering anthem “Options” were standouts, showcasing her emotional range and songwriting prowess.
The performance hit a nostalgic peak during her cover medley, where she effortlessly blended Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” with her own unique flair. HAVS’ ability to transition between heartfelt ballads like “Beside Me” and the upbeat groove of “Cap” kept the audience fully engaged. By the time she closed her set, she had not only warmed up the crowd but left an indelible impression, proving herself worthy of any stage. The anticipation for RUSSELL!’s first Winnipeg performance in over ten years was palpable. Opening with “JUST LIKE CANDY,” he immediately had the crowd wrapped around his finger. His set was a masterclass in blending nostalgia with innovation, combining his older fan favourites with newer tracks that showcased his growth as an artist.

The highlight of the evening was RUSSELL!’s ability to connect emotionally with the audience via storytelling, whether that was explaining each song in immense detail or the music itself. Whether it was the wistful vulnerability of “Lindsay’s Freestyle” or the melancholic beauty of his Tamia cover, “Officially Missing You,” he made the venue feel intimate and personal. Even unexpected choices, like his playful rendition of “Ripped Pants” from SpongeBob SquarePants, drew laughter and applause, demonstrating his charisma and ability to surprise fans with his humorous side.
Tracks like “HARTTBREAK” and “SWEETEY PABLO FREESTYLE” brought energy, while the smooth grooves of “LADY” and “WAKEUPNEXT2U” had couples swaying in unison. Closing with the heartfelt “SCARLETT'S WEEKEND,” RUSSELL! left the stage to thunderous applause, affirming his place as a master of R&B storytelling. The Dearly Loved Tour’s Winnipeg stop was a celebration of artistry and emotion, bridging the local and the international through music. HAVS shone as a testament to Winnipeg’s thriving music scene, while RUSSELL!’s return was a triumphant reminder of why his fans have stuck with him for over a decade.
For those lucky enough to attend, the night was a powerful reminder of the beauty of live music and the connections it fosters. It wasn’t just a concert—it was a love letter to the fans, the city, and the power of R&B and pop.
