Interview With Caroline Romano

I got the chance to sit down with Nashville-based singer-songwriter Caroline Romano before her show at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, CA. We talked about being on tour and new music. Her brand new single "Doesn’t Matter" was released on Friday, May 3rd.

Press shot for the rising singer-songwriter Caroline Romano.

What has been your favorite moment while being on tour?

Caroline: I feel like just getting to be in an environment where people are so attentive and listening. Living in Nashville, there’s a lot of industry people in the crowd. So this being just people who are genuinely here to listen to music and enjoy it, has been really awesome. As well as meeting new people.

Do you have any tour essentials that you bring with you?

Caroline: My tour essentials are definitely glitter and coconut water, that has been my lifeline and the two things that keep me going.

Are there any songs that you love performing live?

Caroline: I really love performing "Girl In a China Shop" live because it’s so angsty and people seem to get into it. Then there’s a new one that’s not out yet, but it’s called "Body Bag" and it’s kind of a dancier one and I really love performing that one too.

Do you have a favorite venue you performed at so far?

Caroline: I’m really excited to perform here at El Rey and also at House of Blues in Dallas, It will be fun. But I’ve also never been to San Francisco and we played The Independent and it was super cool.

Describe your new single "Doesn’t Matter" in 3 words?

Caroline: I would say odd, double-edged, and off-beat.

What was the creative process like for "Doesn’t Matter"?

Caroline: I started this new thing with one of my friends. He's a producer and I work with him a lot. He was like, "Do you want to come over every Monday and I’ll start making something and you write whatever you want and we don’t talk to each other, we just do it and then put them together." So that was the first song we did like that and we wrote it in about an hour. It was a very stream of consciousness for both of us. It’s cool how you’re just like, "Fuck it" and it turns out cool.

How did you come up with the artwork cover for "Doesn’t Matter"?

Caroline: I texted my photographer Haley, and said, "Do you want to go to a field?" I was trying to think of something that felt not happy, but also not sad. The song is a weird in-between feeling. That’s what it’s kind of all about. I wanted something that felt a bit mysterious and a little bit of you can’t quite place what’s happening. It’s very blurry and we were just out there in this field and I was walking barefoot.

Are you currently working on any new projects?

Caroline: I have a lot of songs that I’m hoping to put out in a project this year. "Body Bag" is the only new one I’m playing on this tour. But yeah, I want to put out a project this year, I have a lot of songs on hold for that.
