Release Date: October 6, 2021 Genre: Pop Label: Independent

Alex Porat’s debut album Miss Sick World presents an intoxicating fusion of pop, alternative, and electro-pop, delivering a vivid and personal exploration of love, heartache, and self-discovery. The Canadian singer-songwriter, known for her dreamy vocals and emotive songwriting, breaks new ground with this release, creating a distinct sonic landscape that feels both playful and deeply introspective.

The album opens with the vibrant track “bubblegum,” a bouncy pop anthem filled with catchy melodies and a sweet yet biting energy. Porat’s vocals glide effortlessly over synth-heavy production, establishing a mood of lighthearted irony while addressing the idea of superficial love and fleeting connections. Following is the single, "taxi" which takes a more melancholic turn, capturing the yearning for escape while grappling with emotional baggage. The minimalist production, driven by mellow, yet deep synths and Porat's soft delivery, reflects the intimacy of late-night drives, where vulnerability is heightened.

The third track, “dimension,” explores the complexities of feeling out of place in both relationships and the world. Here, Porat blends electro-pop influences driven by a bass guitar, with a touch of nostalgia, creating an ethereal atmosphere that enhances the song’s themes of disorientation and longing.

In “girlfriend,” Porat’s playful and sarcastic tone returns, this time targeting some of the complexities of modern relationships. The upbeat tempo and cheeky lyrics give the track a lighthearted vibe, offering a fun contrast to the more introspective songs on the album.

The title track, “miss sick world,” is perhaps the emotional core of the album. Backed behind an acoustic guitar, the track's haunting melody and raw lyricism explore the idea of feeling lost in an imperfect world, with Porat’s voice carrying a fragile yet powerful quality. This track serves as a reflection on identity and the pressures of navigating life’s messiness.

“happy for you” delivers a bittersweet narrative of watching someone move on, while “never say ily again” dives into the fear of commitment and emotional vulnerability. Both songs feature beautifully layered production that balances upbeat pop elements with darker lyrical themes, showcasing Porat’s knack for blending contrasting emotions.

In “only hanging out cause i’m lonely,” Porat confronts the loneliness that comes with temporary relationships, with her vocals capturing a sense of detachment and self-awareness. The track's production echoes the isolating feeling it portrays, with its moody beats and introspective tone.

The album closes with “forgot to forgive,” a deeply reflective ballad that focuses on unresolved emotions and the difficulty of letting go. The stripped-down production allows Porat’s voice to shine, delivering a powerful conclusion to an album filled with emotional highs and lows.

Miss Sick World is a cohesive and emotionally resonant debut that showcases Alex Porat's ability to blend catchy pop hooks with vulnerable, authentic storytelling. Her exploration of love, loneliness, and self-reflection makes this record a standout, marking her as a compelling new voice in the pop landscape.
